Lactation Lounge

National Building Museum

Goal | Create a nursing room that exhibits the best design thinking in wellness spaces to serve families with infants and young children.

 

I collaborated with a team from the architecture and design firm, Perkins and Will, to create a lactation lounge for nursing parents and their families at the National Building Museum. The goal was to offer a supportive, child-friendly environment that incorporated family wellness in the form of a ‘back deck’ to the Museum’s 2019 Summer Block Party, Lawn. The lounge was designed to address the diverse needs of the Museum’s visitors, including comfort, modesty, and child care. Three unique spaces provided privacy and varied hygienic seating options for nursing parents and their babies. An adjacent area offered space for older siblings to entertain themselves while remaining in view of the nursing areas.

 

In my capacity as Director of Exhibitions and Collections, I conceptualized and directed all elements of this project. I worked closely with the design team to incorporate in-kind support from an array of supporters, including  Synlawn, Synlawn Chesapeake, Knoll, Interface, and Carnegie Fabrics.
